About Me

Hello and welcome to my Page! My name is Florian Frank. I hold a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Spatial Planning from TU Wien (Vienna University of Technology).

During my Master's studies, I worked as a project assistant at TU Wien's Research Unit of Transportation Systems, where I contributed to several research projects. These included Aspern MobilLab, which involved establishing a mobility panel in collaboration with residents of Vienna's Seestadt Aspern district. In the CLK1 project, I worked on parcel delivery systems using parcel lockers. Another project, TRACE, investigated the use of delivery robots for B2B and B2C deliveries in three European cities.

After completing my Master's degree, I joined MovingLayers as a geoinformatics specialist, focusing on software development. My responsibilities included developing, maintaining, and testing QGIS plugins, particularly for electric power line route planning.

Alongside my professional work, I began pursuing a Master's degree in Spatial Data Science and GeoCommunication at the University of Vienna. Through this programme, I aim to further develop my skills in spatial data analysis, programming, and GeoAI.

On this website, I showcase my projects, technical interests, and work in geoinformatics, spatial data science, and software development.

Interests and Research Areas

Transport Data Analysis

How can GIS and spatial data be used to analyse passenger and freight transport and improve its efficiency? I am particularly interested in how spatial analysis can help us better understand traffic flows, develop sustainable mobility concepts, and support changes in travel behaviour.

Urban and Regional Planning

I am interested in how spatial data can be used to analyse urban structures, accessibility, and access to essential services. I am particularly interested in how AI can be used to support planning processes and enable data-driven decision-making in urban and regional planning.

GeoAI and Automation

Another area of interest is the application of GeoAI and machine learning to spatial data analysis and planning processes. I am also interested in the potential of Large Language Models (LLMs) to support planning processes, improve the efficiency of geospatial data analysis, and enable new approaches to the automated processing of spatial information.

Projects and Publications

This section provides an overview of selected projects and publications I have contributed to, as well as projects and work I have developed independently.

Austria GIP Decoder

While working on my Master's thesis, I was looking for a way to decode the bitmasks of Austria's Graph Integration Platform (GIP), an intermodal transport network. The goal was to extract the binary-encoded information to determine which modes of transport are permitted on individual network edges and identify any access restrictions.

This led to the development of the Austria GIP Decoder, a Python project designed to decode and analyse this information, making the GIP transport network easier to use for spatial analysis and routing applications.
